When SS was implemented, there were 16 workers for every recipient. Now there are 3. How is this sustainable?

When it was implemented, life expectancy was 62, while retirement age was 65. Life expectancy today is 78, while full retirement is 66 for some, 67 for others. Raising retirement age 1-2 years in reaction to life expectancy rising 13 years, doesn't work.
